When Martial Journey was approached to host a two hour self-defence session at the CanTeen Lifestyles Camp, we were informed that some of the kids were in a weaken state from their medical treatments and may
tire easily, and that at least one participant will require the assistance of crutches or wheelchair. Based on this information, we developed a programme entitled 'Empowerment'. The focus of the programme is to show
those kids that they don't need fancy moves like Bruce Lee to keep the bullies at bay. It comprised of vital information on how to deter attacks and avoid trouble, basic escapes from grabs and holds, and pressure point
techniques which require very little strength but were very effective. We demonstrated that the techniques were applicable standing up or sitting down, therefore were still valid for someone in a wheelchair. We even
demonstrated how someone may use their wheelchair to their advantage in a defence situation.
The CanTeen kids were a diverse bunch of amazing individuals who were eager to participate, unintimidated to question, and great fun to be with. We were even treated to some fancy wheelchair manoeuvres which we would never be able to do.
When Christian and I left the camp, we were totally pumped from the positive energy we received.
We were later told by their Recreation Officer, that the feedbacks from the camp participants about our session were so positive that they would like us to host another session at their Winter Camp. It was a wonderful compliment and an honour.
Since, some of the participants from the Lifestyles Camp will also be at the Winter Camp; we modified the programme so we could present something fresh. At the Winter Camp, along with the self-defence moves, a
Crime Stats Quiz was introduced to test how savvy the kids really were and to encourage conversations. The kids shared their experiences and we were able to learn from each other. They made us feel a part of their group, and we hope we left a lasting impression on them too.
